There’s Nothing Like a Plot

What can I say, I love plots

“The Sister” on Hulu is very typical in a lot of ways. It takes place in England and there’s murder and a lot of rain and weird pubs and a creepy English guy with lank hair and bad teeth and an old Peugeot and another sort of sad English guy who has a long-face and wears giant dumpy parkas. It is atypical in the sense that despite its many tropes I’ve never seen anything quite like it. I don’t want to say anything more than that because I want you to know nothing, as I did when I started watching.

This show, comprised of four hour-long episodes, was so fun to watch that we didn’t even binge it but watched one episode at a time, over four nights. It does not have any big ideas, it does not have any ideas at all, but it does have a hell of a fucking plot, and I am not going to tell you what it is. I will say from the moment this thing started I was like, holy shit, what is going to happen next? The general mood is suspenseful, the individual scenes are suspenseful, the characters surprise you in ways that are —surprising, but not arbitrary.

I love plots. I love that skin crawl feeling when you’re shocked by what’s happened but you also kind of feel like you knew it all along. I love when you think you know how bad someone is, but they were really so much worse. This feeling so rarely happens.

I don’t have anything more interesting to say. Sometimes I wish reviews were just, this is good, watch it, so, that’s all this is.
